The Rest of the Story
The rest of this page will tell you a bit about my professional life. Some call me an entrepreneur though I think that's just a fancy word for unemployed! I just really love doing a few different things, have fun doing them! Feel free to read each section and use the links within, skip to the one that interests you or if you just want to know what's in it for you (how dare you!), use the navigation above.
Act 1 - Comedy Magic
Magic began as a hobby when I was a kid. My father, a dentist would do magic for kids in his office to reward them for good behavior. He would also do those tricks for me and my sister at home. But it was when I met Jeff Hobson at Nippersink Manor Resort (a family summer vacation spot) that I knew I wanted to be a comedy magician. Oh and to this day he is still a good friend and mentor to me. Thanks Jeff!
I went on to entertain with close-up sleight of hand in restaurants, perform at kids parties and eventually graduated to adult parties, corporate events and casinos. Nothing wrong with kids parties by the way. I respect anyone who can keep the attention of children for more than 10 minutes! I just don't fancy myself a children's entertainer. Sprinkle in a comedy club here and there and I've been doing it ever since. Including a few appearances in "Magic Chicago," and a 2 year run of my own one-man show "Sleightly Funny."
Act 2 - Personal Training
Personal training? How do I go from entertaining to personal training? In the wake of 9/11, my corporate entertainment bookings were at an all time low. I needed a part time job and a place to workout so I started working in customer service at at a private athletic club. With a love for Chicago sports, it was easy to fall for the fitness industry.
in 2002 I became a certified personal trainer. In 2004, a certified strength and conditioning specialist. I've since been helping the general population of endurance athletes, high school, NCAA and Pro athletes prevent injury and improve performance. And now I'm speaking to groups as to how laughter mimics the physiological effects of exercise on the body for stress relief and better brain function.
Act 3 - Pizza Making
Everyone needs a hobby right? Loving all things Chicago (especially pizza), back in 1999, I began perfecting my own deep dish pizza. I tried numerous recipes week after week, would eat one slice, sometimes only one bite and then pass the rest off to his neighbors. My neighbors loved me! With months of trial, the help of some of my more than willing taste testing friends, the Chef at Pizzeria Due (sister restaurant to Pizzeria Uno), my late great pal Chef Stutz and a few others, I nailed it! Now I'm cooking for and entertaining guests with my one of a kind dinner show experience, Magic by the Slice.
Act 4 - Auctioneer!
Back in 2015, I was asked if I would kindly donate a Magic by the Slice experience as a benefit live auction item. I attended the event and quite honestly, I was not happy with how my item was sold. It just so happens I taught myself to chant like an auctioneer for a trick in my one-man show. Wouldn't you know, in 2016 I was introduced to the right people, got my auctioneer license and I've been having fun running benefit auctions ever since!
Finally the end of this page!
So as you can see whether on stage in a grand ball room, conference room or your living room, I belong in front of an audience and certainly enjoy holding the mic. Just remember, some of the jokes are just for me, if you like 'em, that's a bonus!
